Separate firearm deer seasons by Zones?

Dear Woods-N-Water News:

I have been thinking about the proposed changes for the Michigan Firearm Deer opener. I have heard many different plans but I came up with one that I thought might work on many levels and haven't seen much discussion on.

Basically it is a rolling opener. The opening days would start one week apart by Zone. The season would last for 9 days starting on a Saturday and ending on a Sunday. Using 2009 as an example; Zone 3 Nov. 7-15, Zone 2 Nov. 14-22 and Zone 1 Nov. 21-29.

The advantages I see to this is that the hunter gets to experience three opening days. Hunters get firearm hunting for 4 full weekends yet the deer only have nine days to deal with us chasing them around the woods, reducing their stress and helping the deer get thru winter better. Hopefully some bucks will make it in better shape.

It allows for the traditional deer camps to be held as always (though the date may change) and allow folks to try new areas. I personally hunt opening day in the Fairview area as I have for 23 years with family and friends and miss opening day in my backyard in Washtenaw County. I give up awesome hunting for good hunting to be with my friends. This would allow me to explore the U.P. under the best conditions instead of a late season low percentage hunt, and not miss hunting in my local area under the best conditions.

It should help focus law enforcement to smaller areas and make deer check stations easier to man. Another plus is for businesses that have massive amounts of people take off for opening day. Again this time off would get spread out depending upon where people hunt making it easier to actually get time off.

I hear that part of the success (big bucks) of states like Ohio and Illinois is the short seasons. This would accomplish that goal, with actually giving hunters more opportunity afield. I would leave the other seasons as they are (bow and muzzleloader), stopping and starting as the other seasons start and stop.
