Redneck Tournament makes joke of a serious problem

Dear Woods-N-Water News:

It is very hard to talk about the serious side of Asian Carp during the Redneck Tournament. Understandable, running around trying to catch giant flying fish with a net! Once they go through a cloud of Flying Carp, they get the fever, they go too fast, miss way more than they catch, but they're out of control, got the fever!

I go down there, to talk serious, deal with the media, get the word out. I talk to the locals, get the facts, the media leans toward the crazy, as I said understandable. Let me tell you what I've learned in 6 years of this.

They used to have Pro Bass Tournaments; the best place to catch speckled bass was the stump right across from the Boat Tavern Boat launch, where the Redneck starts from. Well the Bass tournaments, the stump and the speckled bass are gone. They have an Asian Carp fishery, Redneck or otherwise!

In 6 years I've watched increased Asian Carp commercial fishing, increased laws, increased studies, increased moneys spent, and I've watched the Asian Carp keep doubling their numbers and spreading.

The Asian Carp plan is for the most part just another really big and expensive study. However the "Experts" agree native fish in "Sufficient Numbers" can prey on young Asian Carp. This is all we need to know, we know we don't have sufficient numbers now, because they eat the invasives we have now that don't grow too big, Asian Carp do, so we have to attack the YOY. The experts say a diverse native fish population is more resistant to invasive species. A high native fish population would only compliment any invasive species control program. So why aren't we rebuilding our native fish populations?

It's easy to do, people willing to do it on both sides of the lake. Best to have them in place before the Asian Carp get "Sufficient Numbers" to control our native fish spawns? Bottom line is we have predators for Asian Carp, to not use them would be a crime.
