How about a Perch Stamp?

Dear Woods-N-Water News:

Kenny Darwin is alright in my book. Mr. Darwin, if I may, It's my understanding the DNR tried in court to stop commercial perch fishing and lost, they also run perch nets in spring at river mouths I'm told.

So what to do?

Well my friend in New York says in the 80s they had a perch stamp for $3 and bought off the commercial Perch guys in the New York section, took less than three years.

Why not Saginaw Bay?

I'd pay $5 to get rid of commercial perch fishing, add a couple fundraisers, raffles etc., it could be done. My NY friend just retired and now guides for walleye, jumbo perch, and smallmouth, and he doesn't have time to even email, he says, busy!

Regarding Saginaw Bay walleyes; all the bait fish last year should have been a clue. My last trip last year was o.k., but not like 2008. The word is out on Saginaw Bay, when some one tells you how many they caught that's probably how many they kept. Perhaps you've talked to some of the "I ain't driving that far for just five fish" crowd? What do you expect?

You have one walleye hot spot in the state, the rest mediocre or lousy, they've been fished down. One walleye over 23 inches, protects the big female spawners and if people are making more than one trip per day, they're only taking one big one per trip, restrict them at the scene of the crime, you know they want to brag how many big ones they got. Happens on the west side of the state too, when they do trip over walleyes, they don't know how to count!

One walleye over 23 inches, statewide, rebuild them, if people know they can catch walleyes, somewhat consistently, they'd be less inclined to load up when they get lucky. Costs nothing to do, pays big dividends long term, it would be responsible fishery management.

Sincerely

Tom Matych
